Meet the Fire Lily:
When I recently watched David Attenborough’s programme on the African Fire Lily I felt a sermon spring to mind. This fire lily has not only adapted to withstand fire but relies on fire to complete its life cycle. In fact, the lily requires smoke to flower. And if that’s not enough to baffle you, fire lilies seem to only reproduce after a fire.
The troubles we face in life can sometimes feel like an unquenchable forest fire that’s difficult to contain. Thanks be to God that the Holy Spirit gifted to us helps us to withstand our momentary troubles in life. Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world,” John 16:33. We not only have the power to stand firm amidst our troubles, but troubles also complete our life cycle. Handled with dependence on God, our troubles mature us in faith. “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all,” 2 Co 4:16-17.
When we followers of Jesus go through challenging times and remain determined to trust God and stand in His strength, that’s when we blossom. That’s when we realise we need God and each other and take our eyes off ourselves and onto the bigger narrative of God. Like the lilies that will only reproduce after a fire, we are more willing and ready to share Jesus with others when we’ve felt his presence during our valley experiences.
God created the fire lily and He created you and me. We have much in common actually 😊
