Pastor’s Pen 3rd October 2021

03/10/2021 By Pastor Julie

Breathe:   If you’re feeling a little stressed, a little over-it, or slightly grumpy …..breathe! Be kind to yourself, and don’t judge yourself. When in your lifetime have you had to isolate in a “bubble” for 7 weeks?

Apparently “quarantine” is seven centuries old in response to infectious diseases. The Plague went on from from 1347 to 1352. It was initially spread from sailors and rats, and spread from the eastern Mediterranean throughout Italy. It then moved to France, Spain, Austria, and central Europe. Towards the end of the 14th C the pandemic was over but had not disappeared. During the next 350 years outbreaks of pneumonia and septicaemia occurred in different cities. The way society avoided infection was to separate healthy from infectious persons.

So you see, quarantine and isolation are not that new. It worked for societies past, and somehow they got through it. Thankfully, due to vaccinations we will not have to suffer another 350 years of sub-cluster infections. But does knowledge of societies past really help us in everyday life? Hopefully! It shows us that we humans are more resilient than we give ourselves credit for. There is something in us that desires to live and preserve life, more than anything else.

And you, as a Christian, have a higher desire to survive than most, because the Spirit of life lives in you. So breathe! Breathe out your anxieties and breathe in the power of the Spirit. You were designed for life.

“The Spirit gives life,” John 6:63

About Pastor Julie

I’m passionate about the church – building believers up in their faith, to be all God intended them to be; and I’m passionate about sharing the love and hope of Jesus with people who don’t know Him yet.
