Mother’s Day May 9, 2021:
Although nowhere in Scripture supports the worship of Mary, mother of Christ, she is still to be honoured as one favoured by God (Luke 1:28). In fact, the angel Gabriel told the virgin Mary, “You have found favour with God,” (Luke 1:30). Mary, a descendant of King David, lived a righteous Jewish life. The Son of God could have come to earth without any help from a human, but God chose for Christ to be born through Mary, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to reveal that He was truly human and truly divine.
God values mothers and fathers equally. They are both made in the image of God (Ge 1:27). “Then God blessed them and said, ‘be fruitful and multiply,’” (Ge 1:28). Both mother and father were given the job of filling the earth and governing it, reigning over fish, birds, animals, and plant life (Gen 1:28-30), but not dominating each other, or other humans.
Although mothers suffer pain during childbirth, because of the Fall (Ge 3:16), God still loves them dearly and honours their role. God’s 5th Commandment tells us to honour our father and mother, (Ex 20:12; Mt 15:4 and 19:19). To “honour” means to “Prize highly, care for, show respect for,” (However if you have suffered abuse at the hands of a parent, Christ’s justice has your back – Mt 18:6).
So how can you honour your mother today? If she is still alive, give her a call, or a visit, if possible, buy her a gift, do something to help her, spend time in conversation, shout her a meal out. If your mother has passed on, take time to remember any appreciative things you have learnt from her. To all mothers today who have nurtured their children and done their best …..thank you!
