“Discernment in tricky situations:”
This week a young lady came to the church door. She reeked of alcohol and was crying. She claimed she’d been involved with the wrong crowd and was trying to get home quickly. Viv was updating my computer at the time so I couldn’t leave to run her home. My mind was racing. Should I give her money for a bus or not? Is this another female gang member ripping me off again? After some discussion and much internal prayer I gave her $12 (the only money I carry these days), blessed her and showed her to the bus stop.
Did I do the right thing? Maybe. Maybe not. What I can say is that on this occasion I had a real peace about my action. Its the Holy Spirit who gifts us discernment and peace. When we cry out to God in times of need, and our request is according to His will, then we will have a peace in our hearts concerning our action.
“And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, ” Philippians 1:9-10
