Let your human spirit reflect Christ this Christmas
Every human on earth has a human spirit which is given by God to sustain life. This spirit is not the same as the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Holy Trinity, who gives a believer, divine eternal life and revelation about things of God that they would otherwise not know. “The Spirit Himself witnesses with our spirit that we are children of God,” Romans 8:16. Non believers do not have the Holy Spirit, but they still have a human spirit given by God. Non-believers, just like believers, inherently know the difference between right and wrong. Every human understands the concept of “love” and we crave it. Every human desires peace, respect and dignity. Our human spirit is given by God and actually every human instinctively knows God’s moral code, whether they acknowledge it or not.
As a Christian, your human spirit is now “on steroids,” so to speak, because you now have revelation about the deeper things of God. Sometimes at Christmas we Christians can’t help but “Bible-bash” our unbelieving family members, and wonder why it ends so badly. I wonder if we worked on blossoming our human spirit, with the help of the Holy Spirit, we may have more success. Everyone wants to love and be loved, so let our words and actions be loving this Christmas. Criticism and meanness will not draw people to Christ. Loving our families, “warts and all” reflects Christ and is very appealing. Forgive….yet again. Don’t start or escalate arguments…. keep the peace as best you can. Be kind. Be joyful. Offer hope.
Jesus Christ had no outside beauty or majesty that attracted people to him (Isaiah 53:2), but look how many people were drawn to Him. Even as a baby, astrologers, shepherds, and prophets were drawn toward Him, and yet the Holy Spirit did not descend upon Him until His baptism (Luke 3:22). As a child Jesus Christ blossomed His human spirit, and “grew in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.” Let us go and do likewise.
