When we go through hard times in life we ponder the question, “Does God care for me?” Sometimes our issues seem to build one on another …. financial worries, employment stresses, relationship breakdowns, loneliness, grief, sickness, and we wonder “Where is my God? Does God care for me?” If you feel like this, you are not alone. Job, who lived in the 2nd millennium BC, and who was described as “Spiritually blameless and upright before God” in the OT Book of Job, also lamented his predicament. His wife urged him to curse God. His 3 friends unhelpfully suggested he confess some unknown sin. When Job first experienced calamity he reacted with calm patience and reserve. However, as time progressed and he struggled to make sense of his suffering, he cursed his birthday and even accused God of being unjust (Job 21: 7-26).
In a sense Job represents all of humanity. We all face troubles in life that often have no reasonable explanation. What will our response be? When God appeared to Job (a theophany), Job was speechless. He finally admitted that he had limited knowledge of God. Although God does not answer the reason for Job’s suffering, God does commend Job for looking for his answer in the right place. Are you looking for your answers in the right place? Does God care for you? Yes, he does. Job’s story proves that it is possible to maintain a steadfast faith throughout all life’s ups and downs. Not all suffering is due to sin. God cares for you, and when you trust in that truth you will start to notice the small things that God does to keep you afloat and walking with Him.
You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.
