This week on Aljazeera news, they claimed that carbon dioxide is at it’s highest level in human history (over 415 parts per million), due mainly to the burning of fossil fuels. The university of Bristol latest research suggests that seal levels will rise by 2 meters by 2100AD. Other research suggests a more conservative 1 metre.
The rise is due to the melting ice in both Antarctica and the North Pole. This will mean that low-lying cities like Shanghai, and other coastal towns and cities, will be submerged. At least 1 million plant and animal species are threatened with extinction; many within decades, and more than ever before in human history. “The culprits are: changes in land and sea use, direct exploitation of organisms, climate change, pollution, and invasive alien species,” (ipbes.net)
It is not too late to save and take care of our planet as God instructed us to do (“Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground,” Genesis 1:28). Our world needs transformation – economically, socially, politically, technologically (and obviously spiritually).
So church, let’s get actively involved. Support organisations who are making a difference, and start making cleaner, greener choices in our own homes.
