OK so it’s December now and a natural time to ponder the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, and what that means for our personal faith and in fact for all of humanity.
It’s hard to get our heads around the fact that Christ was born both fully human and fully God. There are many unanswered questions.
How could a baby be “fully God” and not explode with all that power?!?! I still find it hard to understand the mechanics of God limiting Himself and coming in the form of a little babe. Christ grew up as a child just like you and me. He wasn’t all-knowing, but rather, empowered by the Holy Spirit to do His Father’s will. I find that very humbling. Here we have the Creator of the universe, choosing to leave the perfection of Heaven and come to His created earth and become one of us. As our Heavenly Son of God, Christ knew what He was coming to earth to do. He knew the suffering that was going to await Him as a young man, but He still came…for you and for me, so that we could live in spiritual freedom.
Every time I start to get on my high horse as a leader (which has been quite often this week!) I am eventually humbled by the gracious love and humility that Christ witnessed throughout His human life on earth. As His followers, we too are called to witness grace, love and humility. We will all get it wrong, many times over, but, each time we fall God wants us to get back up and once again reveal His character to a hurting world.
This Christmas, when we ponder on Christ’s birth, may His humility and love move us all to reflect on our own character and let us be willing to let the Potter mould us.
