Imagine 5,000 youth with their leaders camping in tents in a valley called Mystery Creek, near Hamilton. Imagine 2 days of rain and freezing nights. Imagine sleeping (or not) marae- style in big marquees. Imagine an auditorium filled with all these people worshipping God and listening to the fantastic teaching. Imagine sports, and talent quests and lots of food (they seriously did feed the 5,000!). This is a picture of Baptist Youth Easter Camp 2018.
I’ve wanted our youth to go to Easter Camp for the last 6 years. Since we couldn’t find a leader willing to go I decided that I would take our youth, supported by 4 awesome leaders. This was most people’s first time at Easter camp, so we were a bit green as to the structure and process. However, the camp was so well run that I truly felt that our team was safe and looked after there. Did you know that we got into the semi-finals of the volleyball? We also entered the talent quest and did a fine performance.
But the thing that I loved the most was seeing each of our young people and their leaders moved by the power of the Holy Spirit. People were healed of physical and emotional hurts, and God unified us with His love. I was surprised at how hungry this generation were for the things of God, and because they were hungry, God met them at their place of need. We have some amazing young people in our midst. Take the time to get to know them. Pray for them and mentor them. Post-camp, church life can seem a bit boring for our young people but it doesn’t have to be that way. Connect Baptist Church is a family of God and Jesus wants us all to shine. So whatever age you are, it’s time to shine for Jesus!
