Money! Jesus tells us that we cannot serve both God and money
(Mt 6:24). As Christians most of us would say that we would never worship money. However, although we may not worship money outright, money can still be our master unwittingly. Whether we are poor or rich, if making money and owning “stuff” is a pre-occupation, then money is our ‘master.’ Connect Baptist is holding a free seminar on personal financial wellness on Tuesday Sept 6 because as a Pastor I see many people struggling to make ends meet without really understanding how they can be better stewards of the money they have. Banks don’t tell you all you need to know about credit cards, mortgages, insurance and Kiwisaver because it’s not in their best interest. Consequently many of us make poor choices out of lack of knowledge. On top of this all our TV and billboard advertising tells us that we need to own this, save for that, and build up a nest egg for a comfortable retirement. The problem is that when we spend all our time working in order to gain a better lifestyle we actually begin to squeeze God out of our central life, and His will for us and His call on us gets placed on the back-burner. Jesus says, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also,”
Mt 6:21. Let’s make a choice to put God first in everything and be generous towards others with our money and possessions.
