Today we’re talking Spiritual gifts. Every follower of Jesus gets a little excited by these right?
And so you should, because a Spiritual gift is your God-given capacity to carry out your function in the Body of Christ. Every Christian believer has at least one gift but oddly many Christians don’t know what they are. The reason is that they haven’t experimented serving within the life of the local church. This is where you discover what your spiritual gifts are.
Start with your passion. What part of church life and mission gets you really excited? Maybe it’s “saving souls.” So, get involved in the Bread Run, or our new “Breaking Strongholds” ministry about to be launched, or get a buddy and start talking to people in our local streets, or join a club or hobby where non-Christians gather. When you serve using your passion you will discover your Spiritual gifts. If you don’t serve, your gifts remain dormant and the rest of the Body suffers.
1 Cor 12:7 says “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” Again 1 Cor 14:12 says “try to excel in gifts that build up the Body.”
We live in a society that tells us to work hard so that we can play hard, but Jesus tells us to “Be still and know that I am God”. When we do this “Mary” act what we find is that life is restored to us and we discover a new desire, joy, and vigour in serving God using our gifts to help build up the Body of Christ.
So here is a list of many of the Spiritual gifts, in no particular order: Prophecy, serving, teaching, encouragement, giving, leadership, mercy, tongues, interpretation of tongues, wisdom, knowledge, faith, hospitality, intercession, healing, distinguishing between spirits, helps, administration, apostleship, evangelism, pastoring or shepherding, craftsmanship. We need you!
